So land-locked regions can't secede and form a new nation? That's cool new info.

I suppose they could, but when they are surrounded by the country they want to leave, no they can't. Besides, no serious person even talks about it, its a total joke by Canadian Trump fans.

It's been noted for years that the west doesn't feel represented by the governments that Ontario and Quebec elect. I don't think it is unreasonable for them to be disenchanted by a system that pays them no heed yet reaps the benefit of their natural resources whenever it feels like it. Not pro or anti separatist, but I think it's a little outrageous to call what these people are feeling a joke.

Sorry but you are wrong. I don't like the government Ontario elected, the city I live in has never, not once, sent an MP to Ottawa that I have voted for. I don't cry about it or threaten to leave.

I strongly feel that our country needs proportional representation, and I even understand that some people might not feel like they're being represented - that's all fair - but as soon as you start talking about breaking up the country, you sound like a joke, and a baby.

If the rest of the country so strongly disagrees with you, maybe ask yourself some hard questions. But the immaturity of the separatists is just pathetic.

Get mad at me, but literally everyone is laughing at the idea. And again, this is a small minority of crazy people trying to get their way by being really loud. The worst thing we can do is patronize them and pretend to take them seriously.

You have a problem, act like an adult. But saying you want to break up my country? Well the guy above used an acronym that says it best.

Umm, you should take a closer look at the many examples in history. Many regions have "broken" away from a country to form a new nation. Maybe start with European history. After that lesson, then look at a map of Alberta. You'll notice it isn't "surrounded" by Canada, but also includes a border with the USA. Interesting! But even if it was totally surrounded by other Canadian lands, why exactly would that prevent Alberta or any region from seceding from Canada? Take a look at Lesotho. They are 100% land-locked and fully surrounded in every inch by South Africa. Yet they are an independent country, ironically supplying South Africa with plenty of water and other raw commodities. Stick to hockey, err, music, err??

It is.

Yet your blog did very little to distinguish the majority of disgruntled westerners from said “separatists”. Perhaps you should make that distinction more clear in your writing.

Classic Tanner.
Not "Sorry, but I disagree with you." Just straight to, "Sorry, but you are wrong."
Man, it must be tiring being the chosen one.

If anyone besides separatists took offense, I'm sorry. Alberta is a lot like Texas though, and that isn't meant to be an insult.

These are some fairly self centered view points. What about a nation that electorally only serves two provinces yet pillages the natural resources of the rest, leaving them in the lurch when that resource dries up or is no longer politically viable. NL, AB, BC, are all pretty good examples. Do a quick look up of the Province of Buffalo and why that didn't materialize. The west was literally partitioned in order to give the voters out there no political sway and it's been that way pretty much since the beginning. It's reasonable to think that the people out there might want a change. Separation might not be the answer, but the concept at least underlines the fact that there is a serious problem that has been systemically ignored by the federal government.

Imagine if Alberta left. No more equalization payments going East. So I guess Canada could raise taxes on the rest of the country to make up for that. While you are raising taxes, Alberta would be slashing taxes to attract new business and investment. We're also not selling any oil to you. Find another supplier. So now Canadians would face higher taxes and higher energy costs. Have fun with that. Instead we've cut a sweet deal with the US (we do share a border with the US, despite Tanner's claims) to ship all of our oil south to then head to the coast. Or maybe BC comes crawling back and agrees on a pipeline to the West, in exchange for supplying them with oil. You know, because BC kinda needs oil to operate those machines that cut down all the trees and ship in all the organic coffee beans from the other side of the world.

What's the difference? From what I've read, we pay more for our own oil than what we sell it to the States for. Just like the electricity we produce in Ontario.
I didn't realize that there is nothing Alberta needs from the rest of Canada that might necessitate any sort of trade. You seem to have it all thought out. Good luck!

I wonder what's more likely?
1) Alberta separating
2) William Nylander winning the scoring title this year as a member of the greatest team ever assembled in the cap era.
